Brief C.V.

 

Born 1931 in Vereeniging. Studied at Art School, Johannesburg's Witwatersrand Technical College, from 1949 to 1952 (under Phyllis Gardner), obtaining National Teachers Diploma in Art. 1953-1964 taught at Meyerton High School. In 1961, attended the Académie Notre-Dame des Champs, Paris, studying under Henri Goetz (1909-1989) and Selim Turan (1915-1994).

His abstract paintings were first exhibited in Johannesburg and Cape Town, 1962.

In 1965 Claude VAN LINGEN was a lecturer, 1970 a senior lecturer and subsequently Head of the Fine Arts Dept., Witwatersrand Technical College. He was also an art critic. After his divorce, he left South Africa for New York USA in 1978. Studied at Pratt Institute, New York, gaining MA (FA). Lived in New York NY for 27 years, thereafter in Austin TX USA.
